Fu barbaramente assassinata nel marzo del 415, vittima del fondamentalismo religioso che vedeva in lei una nemica per il cristianesimo. Era amica e maestra del prefetto romano ORESTE nemico politico di CIRILLO, vescovo di Alessandria, santificato dalla chiesa cattolica. L’assassinio di IPAZIA è stato un altro atroce episodio di quel ripudio della cultura e della scienza che aveva causato molto tempo prima della sua nascita, nel 3° secolo dopo cristo, la distruzione della straordinaria biblioteca alessandrina, che si dice contenesse qualcosa come 500.000 volumi, saccheggiata e poi bruciata dai cristiani. Dei suoi scritti non è rimasto niente; invece sono trovate le lettere di SINESIO che la consultava a proposito della costruzione di un astrolabio e un idroscopio. Dopo la sua morte, molti dei suoi studenti lasciarono Alessandria. Così cominciò il declino di Alessandria grande centro della cultura antica, di cui era simbolo la grandiosa biblioteca. L’UNESCO, dietro richiesta di 190 stati membri nel 1999, ha creato un progetto internazionale per favorire piani scientifici al femminile.
